Mile 10 on the Boston Marathon Route: Spotlight on Natick Center

Since running the 2009 Boston Marathon, I became familiar with Metrowest towns of Natick, Wellesley, and Framingham as our training runs took us back and forth through those New England main streets and backroads as Chronicle likes to say.

Since our Boston Marathon run, we attended many events in Natick Center; among them concerts at TCAN and fund raisers at Spirit Bear Yoga.

Last November, our dear friends Paula and Walter Dunbar opened Paper Fiesta, a celebration boutique specializing in party supplies, gifts, cards, balloons and Boston Marathon items. As I drove along the Boston Marathon route en route from their store, nostalgia and emotions overwhelmed me as I wrote about in this blog.

Through my connection with Paper Fiesta, I was introduced to the Natick Center Cultural District, "the arts and cultural hub of MetroWest." They are the voice for all the dynamic happenings taking place in Natick Center. In the Natick Center Cultural District, visitors can expect an intimate friendly experience and the rich heritage of a classic New England town, while celebrating a vibrant, contemporary fusion of art, culture and business.

From concerts to Farmers Market, to cultural events and events that support the community's youth to supporting all of the local businesses in Natick Center, the Natick Center Cultural District promotes and takes great pride in the rich and unique offerings of this historical New England Town.

As a sign posted in Paper Fiesta boasts, "“Every runner in the 123 year HISTORY of the Boston Marathon RAN past where YOU STAND.”-since 1897"

I am deeply honored and grateful to have my Extraordinary Book Launch Party on April 6th at Paper Fiesta!

Coincidentally, on the evening of April 6th, The Natick Center Cultural District is having their Annual Fundraiser:

This year our Annual Fundraiser will be, 'An Evening of Culture", and the district will be featuring some amazing cultural talent from within our own community! The event begins with a cocktail hour from 7-8:00 pm and the performances at 8:00 pm. Come be wowed by your community members and their talent while supporting the local arts, culture & downtown businesses, in Natick! Natick Center Associates is the 501(c)(3) that runs the Natick Center Cultural District. This is our one fundraiser for the year so please consider joining us for this great event. There will be exciting performances like Flamenco, Salsa, Bollywood and Irish Dance! Purchase tickets here

My running adventures have taken me to many wonderful places. I've had the opportunity to explore places that I might not have known about. Mile 10 on the Boston Marathon route has a very special place in my heart. If you live or are visiting the greater Boston area, be sure to visit Natick Center and discover the charm of this historic yet contemporary New England Town.

“The Adventures of Runnergirl 1953” takes you on Mary McManus’ healing odyssey from a wheelchair to the finish line of the 2009 Boston Marathon and beyond. After the diagnosis of Post-Polio Syndrome in December 2006, Mary got still and asked for Divine Guidance tapping into the powerful connection she experienced to the Divine from an early age. She harnessed the power of her mind to heal her body, feverishly writing poetry in which she imagined herself healthy, whole and free from the shackles of her youth. Mary’s quest to heal her life led her to the sport of running. Her story is one that will leave you cheering for the underdog, discovering the meaning of different ability and experiencing the stunning view from the back of the pack of a race. You will have the privilege of bearing witness to how Mary overcame every challenge that life presented to her. The sport of running provides the backdrop for her journey of transformation from a survivor of childhood paralytic polio and severe trauma at the hands of family members to a woman who embodies faith, grace under fire, courage, determination, endurance and resilience. Running became a way of life for Mary that tested her mettle while forging friendships to last a lifetime. As you’ll discover in “The Adventures of Runnergirl 1953” nothing, not even a serious knee injury in December of 2014 could stop her on the roads or in her life.
